Recently one of our data collectors kicked the bucket. It is a Field Tracker Xtreme, running FieldGenius. We like the FieldGenius software and run Leica GPS and total stations. The local FLT guy recommended a TOPCON FC-500. Also recommended was a Spectra Nomad 1050B w/ Survey Pro, but that would mean changing software. A brief search of FieldGenius compatible data collectors brought up the MicroSurvey DC5 or other DC collector with an updated version of FieldGenius. I am hoping somebody has had experience with one of these collectors and could possibly steer us in the right direction toward a piece of equipment. We would like to stick with FieldGenius. Thanks in advance!

I thought the Nomad 1050 was compatible with current FG. If not, you could scoop a used Nomad 800 or 900 off of ebay and migrate your FG over (check compatibility first, of course).

I've got a Nomad 800 that has been a good combo with FG 7. Note the 800 has limited range BT. So, I've been using a parani connected to the serial port. It rocks.

    >>> Funny thing on the microsurvey website. It appears FG9 will work on a Recon. Hard to believe it will run on the old Recons and not the Nomad. You may want to call them.

If you're running Leica robots I would try to find an Allegro MX or CX with the integrated radio pod. I've had one of each driving an 1105 and a 1203 and it worked very well; only difference is I was running SurvCE. I have an old CX model laying around somewhere with FG on it so I know the hardware is compatible with the software.

What are you going to do with the old one? Suppose an aspiring student wanted to see if they could resuscitate it in exchange for a few months (or more) use of it? Any idea what's wrong with it?

We use the DC 5 with Field Genius and a Leica TS12 with no issues except that we are limited to about 500' between them. This is not a problem for us urban folks: and how far do you really want to be from your bread and butter anyway.
