I was looking information on the web, and stop on this forum. Very helpful, sorry is my English is not perfect is not my native language. I practice surveying in NC and now on FL. More involve in the cad now. I have a 4 year degree in surveying and i am thinking to take the fs exam as soon as I can and cover all the study that required for the exam. Any recommendation of books or related information about that, is appreciated. You have a new colleague in here, have a nice day.

You will need these 2 to start with. If you took your degree in the US you will already have them. Early editions are fine for testing level and available for just a few bucks.
    1. Brown's Boundary Control & Legal Principles
    2. Brown's Evidence and Procedures for Boundary Location
I also recommend Jan van Sickle's GPS for Land Surveyors. The 4th edition is the latest. I wouldn't mess around with old editions of this. It's as much about current coordinates systems as it is about GPS.

Mr. van Sickle also has a book of sample questions and answers titled Surveying Solved Problems for the PS and FS Exams. Most helpful. Don't confuse it with another, now out of date, book by the same author titled 1001 Surveying Solved Problems. Old guys like me relied on that one but it's out of date now.

THe FS test is a national test, so you are going to need to have a knowledge of the Public Land Survey System. For that you need the current BLM Manual, which can be downloaded, and a basic survey text like Elementary Surveying (Ghilani) which will have a chapter on PLSS, among many other basic things. Which I presume that, having a degree in these matters, you are well acquanted with.

Get hold of the sample exam books such as Surveying Solved Problems. That should give you a good idea just how much studying you have to do.

I would like a copy of E&P the first edition (1962?). I've found some online but it's hard to tell if they are the first. The Authors were Brown & Eldridge which I think is unique to that edition. The listing (no photo of the book) shows those authors and 1962 but then the synopsis mentions the current authors. I think they are just lifting the synopsis off the internet but can't be sure.

Get the NCEES sample problems. (maybe that was the "Survey Problems Solved" that Mark Mayer is referring to, but I thought I would throw that in there in case it isn't). I reviewed the latest NCEES sample problems and realized I would have to do some studying if I had to take that test again. The actual test more than likely will not have the same exact problem, but it will give you a feel if you need to study more statistics, or more on aerial mapping...etc.

'62 is the first edition of that book. It was reprinted a number of times. There are a couple available right now on Alibris for under $5.

You can find the Elementary Surveying (Ghilani), older versions, on Abebooks and Albris for just a few dollars. I have two copies of the same edition, one for home and one for the office. I think I might have paid $5 and free shipping.

A pdf of the 13th edition (2012, the next to most recent) can be downloaded for free.

Land surveying. It's like the guy that repairs transmissions.
He can remove the transmission, in less than an hr. because he has all the right tools, and knows how to use them.
Same with surveying. What you know, becomes your tools.
Surveying and keeping your tools current, means a lifetime of learning.

We seem to have temporarily run the price of early copies of BC&LP and E&P up on alibris.com. It looks like they will cost more like $20 if you have to buy today. If you can just standby for awhile they will come back down.
