When you can look at old surveying equipment, (Transits, compasses, chains, tapes, field books, etc) and after a few hrs, go back to sleep, feeling like you have done a days work!

🙂

Surveying is more than a Job----it is a passion to provide a foundation for future generation, that is beyond reproach.

When stuff you layed out for construction is being torn down to make way for new construction.

EDUCATION, n. That which discloses to the wise and disguises from the foolish their lack of understanding.

EXPERIENCE, n. The wisdom that enables us to recognize as an undesirable old acquaintance the folly that we have already embraced.

...you can recall surveying down the median of an interstate freeway with relatively little concern at the time, for errant/distracted drivers.

The worst surveyor is an engineer who thinks they are a surveyor; the second worst surveyor is an appliance operator.

When you retrace a survey you did 25 years ago for another company and don't realize it until you're halfway through the job.

Its one thing not to know. Its another not to know you don't know.

... when you're now buying lots that you surveyed 38 years ago.

I did this. My house is in one of the first subdivisions I surveyed after moving to Texas in 2004.

When you remember being able to set up an instrument out front of a school to get a benchmark without having the cops called on you...

When you look at the beautifully designed certificate hanging on the wall,  hand painted, and see the date. Yet alone the low Registered Surveyor number. (they don't make them like that anymore)

Also when you find old marks from a 1970 survey by self!

You know you can still find in your truck a couple of plumb bobs, a 200' steel tape, and eleven "arrows."

Cheers,

Henry

You apply online for a license in an adjoining state (or Federal District in this case) that requires 8000 hours of experience and the bar graph that shows what you submitted reads 59,340 hours

experience
