Trimble access question when connected to a robot
Posted by jaro on December 9, 2017 at 3:00 amIn the Trimble Access map view when connected to a GPS, my location will show accurately enough that I can stake a radius while zoomed into the map. When connected to a robot, all I get is a line but not a precise location.
I am guessing that the robot is tracking the active prism but not reading a distance. Is there a way of making my location show up in map view so I can stake a radius?

It’s been awhile, but I believe if you put it in tracking mode instead of standard mode it will update your position as you walk. Even better, define the arc and have Access stake you along the arc similar to staking to a line.
Thanks Stephen,
This is a drawing with about a hundred arcs. Some we can stake the radius point and be done but some can’t because of brush.

What I meant was if you create a named arc or arcs in access, then you can tell it to stake to the arc and it will work just like staking a line only your points will create an arc. Or if the stuff you’re staking is all tied together, you could create a horizontal alignment with curve and line segments and stake it like a road centerline.
Couldn??t you load in a DXF and just stake to line and pick the line or radius point
Like Stephen said, switch to tracking mode and it should show your location on the map if it’s locked on.
Stephen,
These arcs are anywhere from 10 ft to 80 ft. Many of them can be formed from one radius point and that is all we give them. We don’t know which ones are clear and which ones are brushy until we stake it. I am using an old Topcon robot and I mark the arc based on the radius point. The trimble robot with access was given to a rookie button pusher by the project manager.
I told the rookie to just zoom in and stake it that way but that didn’t work because the location was not showing. I am looking for a way that I don’t have to spoon feed information to the rookie by phone from a different job. The rookie doesn’t know or use any kind of cad program and doesn’t enter his own alignments. He doesn’t work for me. The project manager does not listen to me. I was not supposed to be involved in this project in the beginning. The project manager wanted to “Do it his way”. The rookie didn’t even know how to setup over a control point until I showed him two weeks ago. They just did a two point resection on everything.
You and others have given me some ideas. I will try a few and see which one will be simplest to teach a button pusher. If it is as simple as picking an arc on the drawing and staking it, surely they can’t screw that up.
Thanks,
James

Ah-ha, now the real problem comes into focus. Nothing like trying to teach a DC and instrument that you don’t use everyday to someone with limited experience over the phone. I’d be tempted to be unavailable and forward his calls to the PM. 🙂
I was unable to just pick a line in the dxf background map and stake it that way but changing to tracking mode enabled my location and I can follow the line precisely that way,
thanks,
James

To stake to background file linework you need to enable background selection.
There are a couple of ways to do this.
I find it easiest to be in map view
Then hit the ‘layers’ button
Then select the background file a second time
The tick box will get a dashed surround – the linework is now selectable.
You can expand the background file and choose individual layers to be selectable.
You can also turn individual layers on and off
You can also do this from the background selection option in job properties
Thanks Jim,
I am familiar with the map view and turning layers off or on, I just never knew they could be selected until earlier in this thread. I will try it tomorrow.
