Topcon Hiper SR with external radio
Posted by antcrook on May 2, 2018 at 7:57 pmIs it possible to have an external radio on the Hiper SR?

I think so. Looking at Magnet, it provides an option for a Generic radio with a Hiper SR setup. Asks for Port, Parity, Baud rate, etc. I have never tried it though.
There is only one port on the SR. You would need a serial cable.
I suggest using a Bluetooth to UHF radio such as Sokkia R4S-BT UHF Radio.
How much does the BT radio sell for? I can’t seem to find it anywhere.
$2000 at geo-tronics.com
These are actually made by Satel. There is a Yellow Version sold for Trimble as well. I have a similar radio that works great.
Thanks Lee.
What software are you using?
I use the Satel CompactProof Bluetooth to UHF radio with Magnet Field 4.3.1. Topcon broke thus setup in v 4.3.2 and 4.3.3, they promised me it would work again in v5.0 to released sometime this year.
I am not sure what version of Magnet my field crew are using. They have an old Tesla data collector with windows mobile. They run the Hiper SR on a network connection, but sometimes they get in areas where cell reception is not reliable.
I got it to work with a XDL Rover 2 radio with bluetooth using Magnet 5
Would you be able to provide details of how to set up or pair the bluetooth with the Hiper SR?
Thank you
An OAF update is required to enable the receiver being used as base to output the corrections to the serial port on the receiver. The radio used at the base must be connected via a cable that is supplied with the radio. Although this seems like a minor inconvenience, it does allow running the whole rig, both receiver and radio, off an external power supply.
No cable is required at the rover end, I suppose because of the system architecture allowing for the input of the corrections through a Bluetooth connection on the rover, whereas without the upgrade to the OAF (which Topcon is supposed to supply upon request) a HiPer SR cannot be deployed as a base w/ external radio.
Regarding the OAF update, assuming one has a pair of HiPer SR units, nothing about either receiver makes it inherently base or rover, therefore I would ask for the OAF update for both receivers so that both receivers can be deployed in either application.
One last note, this external radio solution would allow you to use a HiPer SR with another non-HiPer SR receiver in the base/rover setup as long as the radio protocols are matched.
But no cost on the rover side – is that correct?
