Would you buy it? I saw this add on craigslist yesterday and I dialed the number as fast as possible. (Now it's sitting in my garage waiting for a little TLC.) I have always wanted an old instrument like this so condition or brand didn't really matter to me and in fact I didn't even ask. Less is more I figured. Gentlemen said it worked when he put it back in the case and he used it a few times. When I got it it home I took a quick look since I didn't have much time, and saw it was an old A. Lietz Co.:-)
.
I will post actual photos and more info later tonight.
Cheers.
.
.PS. Thanks to Grant for planting a bug in my head about looking for some old equipment.

I love all the old equipment! I usually snap them up myself whenever I run across one in a garage sale or thrift store... Now with GPS, it will soon be lost technology... What a great find!

You can't go and ask us if we would buy it if you already have it in your possession:-P .

Picasaweb Photos

A. Lietz Co., Model 5 ~ 1920's

I have found a little bit of research online about Lietz but nothing that really helps me date the serial number. I just estimated from some of the online listings of Lietz Transits in cyber-world.

These sites have some great information.

http://www.surveyhistory.org/

With the transit itself, the motion is smooth and flawless and besides a few paint chips it seems to be in pretty good shape. I'm quite happy with my find.:-)

Bob, I searched "Surveyor" in for sale category and it came up.

I tend to do searches with craigslist by using the site:_______ Search feature though if I want to compare cities. IE

surveyor site:craigslist.org

Would return pages with "surveyor" from all craigslist cities.
Cheers

It's a nice project to take an old textbook (Davis, Foote, and Kelly was good) with the full instructions for calibrating a transit and work through (and understand) all the steps. If someone has never done it before, they might learn some things that apply to understanding the use of newer equipment.
