Leica GPS 1200 satellite tracking problem
Posted by Moe Shetty on August 13, 2014 at 3:11 pmok folks,
I brought out a 1200 for some static data collection today, but there was this problem; once on station, the receiver powered up, but only tracked ten out of every sixty seconds. never long enough, of course to record data, only struggle with intermittent tracking.my initial guess is that it may not have been aired out for a long while and needs the almanac updated. this receiver may not have seen daylight for up to a year.
in the meantime, I will be reading the gps1200 technical reference manual.
thanks for your advice

Eddie,
If the unit is a GPS1200 GG model you will need to upgrade the Measurement Engine Firmware. There is a known issue that will take place in early versions of the Measurement Engine (ME) firmware for the GG (GPS and GLONASS)models on 27JUL14. The earlier versions of the ME firmware for this series will stop tracking after this date without the upgrade.
There is no need for a current maintenance date for upgrading the ME version of firmware. The needed version of ME firmware is version 3.823
Send back this information:
1. From main menu select the USER key
2. Next choose F3 (STAT)
3. Next choose 3 System Information
4. On the first page (Instrument) look at the top line. If it says GX1230 GG or ATX1230 GG (Smart Antenna) then this is probably the cause.
5. Select F6 (PAGE) once to go tot the Firmware page
6. Send back the main firmware version which is listed on the top line as Firmware: Also send back the Measurement Engine version which should be the 7th Line listed as Meas Engine:
7. If it is a GG model and your Measurement Engine firmware is not 3.823 then it is a simple fix in the ME firmwareLet me know what you find.
I recall a firmware “problem” with certain Leica receivers a week or two ago!
You might do a search on that.

fw v 5.10

main fw version v5.10 build 2404.1512 maintenance is expired
meas engine is v 3.013> 7. If it is a GG model and your Measurement Engine firmware is not 3.823 then it is a simple fix in the ME firmware
we do not own gg receivers, we do have a gg antenna that was shipped by accident, but it works as a navstar nonetheless
mark, your 4mb cf is still in my office, as I am now getting a different problem with a bad backup battery message. grrr! if you want it back, I will send right away.

My Leica rep sent me the instructions Mark provided you in the previous post, so you’d be good to go.
Good luck!
mark, i just got a call from Mark K. about this. open a ticket and they are on it quick!
he clarified my questions, so i will be pushing some firmware updates tomorrow.
Looking at your measurement veresion it is a 3.xxx. The GPS1200 GPS Only had the ME version 2 boards. I guess there were some of the GPS1200 GPS Only that got the Measurement Engine Version 3 installed before the GPS1200 GG came out to market. That is the issue. You will need to load the ME 3 firmware and you should be good to go.
Mark,
old post but trying to jump start an old ATX 1230GG. Tried uploading/pushing new ME3.823 w/cable. Said OK and rebooted but did not upload. Tried to initialize and obtain new almanac but no luck.
Instr Type RX1250TC
Firmware: V 9.02
ME V 3.014
Any suggestions how to upload 3.823 and get an up to date almanac?
Thanks, Hamilton
@surveythemark @Moe Shetty Gooday, I came across a Leica 1200+ instrument with “firmware v7.53, Maintenance end 18.08.10, ME v4.003, ME boot v4.002”, it is not tracking at all. Is there a way around this? I tried updating the ME, and it returned “successful” but not effective.
@hpalmer Please did you get a solution to this? I have been stranded dealing with the same problem
I had similar issue with my ATX1230+ GNSS.
ME4 Firmware V6.112 26.02.13 solved my problem.
