Happy National Land Surveyors Week!
We, in MA, kicked off the week with a little Rendezvous at the Boston Common.
As I said it was “little” or it started that way! The picture above is just after setup. That’s my van, and most of my equipment to the right. Our “learning center” was the white tent to the left;
We had a 100′ baseline to calibrate your pace and a small three legged traverse to run using a compass and pacing. This allowed us to explain a part of our profession using simple tools and then explain how it has progressed through the years by showing the K&E transit, Leica TCR 1105, and the Sokkia GPS.
All this was hands on experience:
Here are outstanding associate members Russ and Priscilla showing the use of a total station to MIT student, Trinity!
We did have the pamphlet and “swag” table.
Here’s a view from the other direction.
It was our first attempt in years at a rendezvous and I feel it was a successful start. We had about 16 PLS’s stop in and visit, many students, and several interested members of the public. I spoke with at least 12 different folks about surveying and at least one member gained a new client! We even had an unexpected guest!

PS: Edit; I forgot to mention how cooperative the weather was!! Record breaking temps in Boston, 70+!!!!
