For those who want to charge by the acre
Posted by holy-cow on December 9, 2017 at 3:39 amFind it amusing when someone suggests a two-acre survey is a major project.
Spent today getting started at cutting 120 acres off of a 400 acre prairie hay meadow and creating an access easement over the remaining 280 acres. I’m pretty sure I could see both Paden’s and Bill93’s backyards at the same time. Started out by circling sections 10,11,14 & 15 on county roads searching for monuments. One half mile stretch of county road is the only penetrator into that block. Drove a lot of miles inside that box and never had to put it in FWD. Found a lovely 10x12x24 sandstone at a quarter-quarter corner. Pretty sure the middle of a six-foot diameter mass formed by several conjoined hedge (bois d’arc) is a quarter corner location. You might have enjoyed watching Santa Claus flat on his back sliding under the bottom barb wire of the seven blocking easy access to the adjoiner’s land that offered superior foot traffic in one place.

Sandstone corners in Kansas? Funny..I always thought the GLO in Kansas used worn out motor patrol blades for all their corners.
Glad you got to get out and grab some fresh air. Watching Santa ‘limbo’ under barbed wire might have been entertaining. but I bet watching Santa get down and up again was probably funnier.
ps – I’ve noticed a prairie dog population explosion down here in some areas. Have you seen any more than usual up there this fall?
We do not have such a species of vermin, but we do have lawyers.
That’s the truth. No prairie dogs anywhere near here.

That does surprises me. The little buggers are thick in some spots down here. Last spring I was up toward Buffalo, OK and saw a couple of quarter sections that were ripe with the little rats. They’re a good way to dial in a scope on a .22…
This may seem unbelievable but my quarter section in Cimarron County, OK doesn’t have any such permanent residents either. But. there is a large “town” about a mile to the east that could use an air tanker load of Agent Orange.
A friend’s kid who has more money than brains spent about $3K (not counting the sniper rifle) to fly from here out to SD for 3-4 days to shoot…….prairie dogs……. from half a mile away.
The rancher who hooked him & his buddy through an ad in a magazine picked ’em up at the airport, took ’em home, fed ’em, and drove them to the killing ground.
After supper they wanted to go to a bar to drink &&, so he drove ’em into town and dropped them off at a gin mill. As they were getting out of the truck he allowed that they’d be smart not to let on to the locals the reason for their trip – all the way from NY for prairie dog shootin’ – and just say they were visiting relatives or some such.

A two acre project can easily take longer than a 400 acre project. I’ve had the research time alone for a 1.5 acre project take longer than an entire 320 acre project.
Yup. The research required is independent of the area involved.

Actually, I’d guess that on average a smaller parcel requires MORE research because many of them have been carved out of big parcels into medium parcels into smaller parcels.

Plinking prairie rats is good clean fun. One or two red-tails and three coyotes cannot keep a large population of them in check. Their presence can destroy a piece of land in a short amount of time AND they are the number one host for fleas that carry the bacteria yersinia pestis. That is the bacteria responsible for Bubonic Plague.
And it’s also a good way to hone your hunting skills…they’re not as dumb as the rats at the city dumb. They’re intelligent and wary, making for good prey…from a distance. 😉

As a kid, I remember Grandpa paying me a nickle each, for every gopher I trapped or shot; while we were on the farm for summer vacation…
Good times!
I hope everyone has a great day; I know I will! Here in Georgia (at least the southwest corner) is being over run with feral swine. They reproduce faster than rabbits and can destroy fields overnight. Anyone wanting fresh pork just contact a framer in the area and get you a night vision rifle scope.
