Columbarium Niche Ownership ?
Posted by rlshound on July 9, 2020 at 12:32 amHello,
Could someone tell me the ownership limits for a Columbarium Niche? Inside face? Outside face? Is this similar to condominium ownership where inside face of wall, top of rough floor and bottom of ceiling structure are the limits?
In any event hope you are safe,
Thanks, Paul

Wow, I knew about these things, but never knew therm “term.” Learn something new everyday.
It seems like a sorry excuse for a trout stream or mountain peak, and not much of a view either!
I did an engineering design for the foundation of a precast Columbarium installation. I worked for a surveyor who was a member of the cemetery association and also handles the plot maps. Cemeteries are exempt from a lot of rules, so even in the same state, nothing is standard. At their cemetery you own the space in the niche and are allowed to put certain things on the door. It is described as Level “A”, Space “3”. Interesting thing when they were planning a lawyer complained about the height exceeding cemetery monument rules, so they lowered it. It was very expensive to install and he believes it will be three generations before they recover the initial investment.

The firm I worked for did a burial ground where you bought a 1 square foot plot and then scattered your ashes in the cemetery. The big question was lot labeling, with over 20,000 lots the joke was that you could retire on the just the labeling. Luckily the County let them develop a standard gridded layout scheme for the plots within a given lot. Still the 3.27 acre plat took 14 sheets.
Just scatter me on a mountain top or burn me in boat.

1 square foot plot … over 20,000 lots … 3.27 acre plat
That leaves a huge amount of land not allocated to plots. More than I’d expect for landscaping and road. What was the rest?
