StarNET and .rw5 file issues
Posted by Tyler Brown on October 25, 2019 at 9:17 pmI’m getting .rw5 raw files from my data collector. Then I use StarTDS to convert this raw file into a .dat file. When I add this .dat file into StarNET it is missing ALL of our set collection data (which is all of the important monuments and control). This takes forever to enter manually. Is there some setting that I have incorrect? Any help is appreciated. I have attached a raw file converted to text below for you to examine since I can’t attach the raw file

Since you are getting the .rw5 file from SurvCE you should be able to download Carlson X-Port from the Carlson website and enable it with your license info for SurvCE.
That program will allow you to import and export and process the data by many methods including least squares and probably export into a file that StarNet will accept.
good luck
I will check that out. Thanks!
I think that you are using the wrong converter. Evidently you are using SurvCE dc software which should be converted with the StarCarlson converter. This even though both TDS/Spectra Precision and Carlson use the RW5 suffix, and appear largely similar, they are different enough.

I have seen something about the StarCarlson converter. Maybe this will solve my issue. Thank you!

I have tried using the StarCarlson converter and it still seems to create many problems with the rw5 file conversion to a .dat file. It’s possible I may have an issue with settings in the converter.. but it is creating duplicate shots for EVERYTHING. This is not a huge issue but it certainly creates clutter when trying to assess other issues. It also appears to create DV lines where there should be none. Do you have experience with StarCarlson?
@tyler-brown
Talk to Micro Survey, they usually have good customer service.
For the most part, I have had good luck with the StarCarlson converter.

Not specifically. But post the .dat file it produces and I can maybe make some commentrs
@norman-oklahoma
It does not look like I can attach .dat files on here.
@tyler-brown
Do it like you did with the raw data file. Add a .txt extension to the file name. I’ll take it off when I get it.
@norman-oklahoma
Okay thank you, I have attached the file.
It duplicates all of the points but it appears to also provide a line for each portion of a set collection (BD, FD, FR, BR).
@tyler-brown
OK, I see what you mean. That is odd. Perhaps you could do a screen shot of the StarCarlson dialogue box so we can see what you have set.
I have to go out just now, I’ll check back in later tonight, maybe tomorrow. Others will take over by then.

Thank you for taking the time to help with this but it appears the crisis has been solved… When the raw file was exported directly from the data collector, using the export tool, it appears to duplicate the data. When we connect the collector to the computer and simply take the existing raw file, it does not contain any duplicate points or issues with the set collections… go figure. Thank you for taking the time to help and hopefully this can help someone in the future. If anyone has similar issues and what I said does not make sense feel free to reach out to me.

What version of Survce are you using?
In the convertor there is an option to average multiple shots as well. Are you running your traverse in set collection?
