Hello from Coastal NC!
Posted by firestix on July 31, 2018 at 3:46 pmStarting a family surveying business in the Coastal NC area and am in the market for equipment. Stumbled onto this site while researching the difference between Trimble’s R8 and R10 GNSS units. Read some interesting discussions. Got hooked.
If you have any advice about the business startup process or equipment suggestions, message me!firestix replied 5 years, 8 months ago 10 Members · 14 Replies- 14 Replies
So you live in one of the 11 Coastal Counties? Lol! Which one?
My in-laws from Minnesota rented a beach house one summer. I asked them to let me help them find one but they insisted on doing it themselves. They called one day to let me know they had signed the contract for a weeks stay. when I asked where it was located they said, ” It’s near you, right on the beach.” I let it go until a couple of weeks before they were supposed to arrive. I figured, hell it’s close, so why bother. Its got to be at either Carolina Beach or Wrightsville Beach and my house is located equidistant between the two. When I got the address of the beach house I found out it was in Corrolla! Yeah… about 6 hours away from me. They might as well been in St. Augustine, Florida, a little further but easier to get to.
the point is… Coastal NC has counties that are worlds apart.
Welcome friend! We like to vacation at Atlantic Beach.
Sorry Jim, I’m in Topsail Island area. I have a similar story of people visiting us who called when the crossed th NC border proclaiming that they would see us shortly. Yeah, they were coming from out west and didnt appreciate how long NC was from east to west. That was a geography lesson well learned.
Welcome here pardner. Good luck in the new business.
Welcome from the Charlotte area.
I was just in Topsail today, did a survey on Surf City’s water tank on Hwy 210.
Looks like the new bridge is about finished.

Welcome from Florida!
St. Augustine, Florida has the freshest, and best, deep fried shrimp on the entire East coast. ?
You’ve, clearly, not visited Sneads Ferry NC before. The 2nd week of August is the illustrious Shrimp Festival. (Truthfully though, I dont’ even eat seafood.) ?

Blasphemy!
Good luck to you from 1900 miles away. But topsail is where we vacation, be there in October to vacation and do some house shopping….maybe when I early retire in 20 years to my beach house, I’ll come work for you part time.
Welcome. Try to add as much as you take. We need fresh stories and questions.

I’m probably gonna have to “take” a bit more. My surveying experience has been rooted in the military. It’s been 20+ years since I’ve gotten behind a TS. Almost all of my recent stuff has been GPS/GNSS work for a local municipality that employs me. I’ve recently acquired me NC PLS license and have finally decided to put it to use instead of paying to have a licence certificate hang on my wall for nothing. Any help, tips, advice about everything (bidding a lot survey to home construction survey, to flood elevation certs) will be taken with much gratitude!
