Here’s another:
Wonder if that is an IMU + camera + EDM? Or just a camera for photogrammetric applications, like the V10?
I would guess the former, because the V10 got discontinued without ever really becoming popular…

I’ll need to understand more about how it works and try it myself (to see how hard it is to make it give me bad data) before I’ll trust it.
I will say, though, I’ve been impressed with the camera-based visual registration on my RTC360. It isn’t perfect but once you learn to dance with the quirks it saves a ton of time in the office.

50-70mm precision and only 10m range, going to be a specific use for it for sure but not a total station substitute just yet.
Those errors are about what I was expecting. I’ve heard users of the GS18T say it usually does MUCH better than the stated 8mm tilt – that the IMU seems to work better than the bubble.
Just wondering what Leica is up with new GS18I and without firmware upgrades to address Beidou signal issues. Anyone know why Leica/Novatel GNSS does not track Beidou SV’s w prn >30?
And if Leica does, correct me if I’m wrong but provide the firmware release you are using.

just browsing throug the latest release notes, you’ll need captivate v5.50
It has been my experience that Leica is usually later to the dance with GNSS updates as they like to take a very conservative approach. Almost no bad fixes, ever, basically.
I saw in a Facebook post that this receiver uses the camera to make point clouds, and the accuracy is better than .06′ about 30′ away.
Leica abandoned their usual conservative approach with the BLK360 scanner, it was a turd that was released before it was fully baked – and most people i know that bought one eventually offloaded it. They (only slightly) released the RTC360 before it was 100%, they quickly rectified that issue. I worry a lot of the “release product” pressure is foreshadowing of things to come now that they’re part of Hexagon. I don’t use Leica departmentally any more, but I remain a big fan of their hardware (software has improved but still trails Trimble) – and there’s always the need to hold Trimble’s feet to the fire to develop better/new tech.
They’ve never left that philosophy with true surveying products from what I’ve seen (robots, GNSS).
Got mine in yesterday. From my initial testing looks like accuracy is around 0.1ft. Dealer training is coming up shortly so will see if i can improve on that with more best practices.
I’m really interested in seeing how the point cloud can be used in the real world.

Tilt sensor, IMU. Now, how does that work? 3 micro gyroscopes?
If so, those are MOVING PARTS, and gyros are subject to drift, and bearing wear. Is the IMU user replaceable?

The “Tilt Sensor” is an Inertial measurement unit or IMU. This is the same IMU that Leica developed for the GS18 T. So no moving parts per say like there would be on a ships and is replaceable by a certified repair tech. However i haven’t heard of a single failure on the GS18t IMU yet and that antenna came out in 2018.
The “drift” is updated by the GNSS position. This is why the IMU is actually more accurate when you are moving it while measuring. Granted you do look strange when your taking a measurement and you are whirling the antenna around.
Eric, I worked the “Chicago land area” back in 1986 do you remember “Harry B Blizard and assoc.”? You were young. Maybe 17 yrs old? Dave Miller was my direct boss. Fun work.
What is better about Trimble controller software over Leica?
As a licensed surveyor having used both access and viva I find access take a surveying for Dummies approach with a simple workflow that you could send the junior office administrator and they’d probably be able to work it whereas Lecia’s approach requires a little more familiarity but with the hotkeys allows a high degree of customation that makes the work faster once you know it. The one “but” with Lecia is lack of a simple “base shift” calculation function whereas access’ single point calibration works fine; not enough to want to have to use access and the hardware it runs though over Lecia’s TPS/GNSS offerings
Good question, these days possibly nothing. I have seen several recent demonstrations of Captivate but haven’t fleshed it out myself in a production setting, so it may be superior. The truth is the best data collection software is the one you know how to use really well and efficiently, and for me that is Access these days. I also still really like Carlson SurvCE, but it isn’t as “pretty” (if that matters) and I never could get used to the fact that it generates so many dang files every day. I’d wager as one became profecient with Carlson it would be as fast or faster than others.
I remember in the early 00s I had a Leica TC303. The data collection was very basic but I could wear a rodman out on topo jobs with a hybrid coding system (combo of key-in and field book) that I devised.

So are you simply walking around the vehicles while keeping the sensor pointed at them, sort of like a SLAM setup?

Curious to hear how light depended the visual tool will be.
* sun in the lens will make pictures worthless?
* idem dito with low light conditions
* how well do rainy pictures work.
* same question with windy conditians, waving trees and brush?
don??t get me wrong, this is innovative and I think it has potential.
I think this is going to be the limitation with this antenna as its using cameras and not lidar. I have bright sun right now, and rain tomorrow.
