Great Opportunity for Oregon PLS
Posted by dave-reynolds on February 21, 2018 at 5:41 pmWell established, 22 year old Land Surveying Business in NW Oregon, West of Portland on the Columbia River. There’s abundant opportunity to expand the business or operate solo, as I’ve been doing for the last 5 years in the “semi-retirement” mode.
Fully equipped for 1 field crew, including robotic total station (Topcon PS with Tesla controller), conventional total station, older static gps (6 Sokia Locus units). One licensed copy of CGSurvey 9 (now Carlson) with AutoCAD 7.
I’m willing to work through some pre-arranged transition period.

Come with trout permit, salmon gear, and a smoker?
Beautiful country. As a kid, we visited through there. Went north to Washington State, climbed an unactive volcano.
Dave’s area is still pretty rural but only an hour (or less) drive from downtown Portland. It seems, to me, to be poised for a big growth spurt.
If I only could…..I would…..I love the Pac NW and Oregon Wine….
P.S. I don’t need to sell in order to be able to retire and am not looking to make a killing here. I truly would like to see this business continue in some form. And have my current Clients and my community continue to be served by a good land surveying company.

The rural nature of Columbia County AND its proximity to Portland is something that’s always appealed to me. And yes, Columbia County -especially the Southern portion- is in the midst of a growth spurt. Maintaining the rural nature, i.e. livability -as with lots of small communities- is going to be a challenge going forward.
@dave-reynolds that is definitely a sweet spot, and ideal for a working retirement situation.
you should provide some more specifics about the exact location, climate, and your client list.is this accurate? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren,_Oregon
I was in the area just West of Corvallis for several years (long ago) and it is one that I learned to love. Warren was visited a few times, I have fond memories.
I work for several of the municipalities in the area and 2 local PUD’s. Also, Oregon’s only producing natural gas field is in Columbia County and I survey gas wells and the associated gas line easements for the energy company that has the leases tied up. I work for many of the local builders. I do lots or rural partitions (1 to 5 acre parcels, depending on zoning) where I help the land owner through the land us process and then survey the partition boundaries and prepare the plats. That’s my favorite type of work. The projects I do vary a lot, an aspect I really enjoy.
It rains a lot in the winter but the temperatures are moderate. Summers are pretty great. There are no poisonous snakes.
I’m actually having a hard time with the retirement thing, but I can’t go on forever (something I’m just now beginning to realize;-) and I would like to find a graceful way to transition out of it.
The reality is that there’s probably about 3 people in Oregon who: have the ambition, SOME money and the willingness to relocate… I just have to find one of them.

Yup. More than once the thought “if I was 40 rather than 54” floated around my head reading this.
I’m 40 and its floating around in my head…..
I don’t have a desire to move to Oregon, but I wouldn’t mind being 54 again.

54 is the new 40 right??

I would settle for a 54 year old left knee… that’s one of the driving issues here.
54 is the new 40 right??
Not if you beat the heck out of your body playing rugby for a dozen years… that makes 54 feels like the old 70.

Well there’s that…
Can I bring my own crew?

Si amigo… your crew may attract clients… not necessarily folks that would be interested in having survey work done.
On a separate but related note, I have heard it said that surveying is the worlds second oldest profession.

I’m 54 and letting it float around in my head.

And people used to scoff when I recruited from surveying programs in Latin America

Is anything coming to the surface? (a thinly veiled effort to bump this thread…)
